Who is PangeaSeed?
PangeaSeed is a Tokyo-based grassroots organization dedicated to educating and raising international awareness on the plight of sharks. Through volunteer activism and various mediums including art, music, film, and photography, PangeaSeed aims to create an open dialog with the global community to develop an understanding of the need to preserve and protect sharks and their habitat.
PangeaSeed is the first organization in Japan to raise public awareness regarding shark conservation and preservation. We rely on the generosity of our supporters.
Their Future = Our Future
Shark specialists estimate that each year over 100 million sharks are killed for their fins. One pound of dried shark fin can retail for US$300 or more. The harvesting of sharks is a multi-billion dollar industry found not only in Asia but throughout the world. Complicating matters is man's fear and lack of knowledge surrounding sharks. This perception results in people not caring about sharks or even believing it’s a good thing to kill them. Of the 400 shark species found, more than 100 are endangered, with many so overexploited it may be impossible for them to ever recover.
It’s also important to note that sharks are an “apex predator” (or top-level predator) meaning they reside at the top of their food chain with virtually no predators to worry about. And as you may know, Mother Nature needs an apex predator to keep the food chain healthy otherwise fish stocks will deplete, potentially causing a food shortage for humans. Today over one billion people on the planet rely on the ocean for food - - if that food source disappears, imagine the problems we’ll face.
How Can You Become Involved?
There are a number of ways in which you can become involved.
First, educate yourself on the issues you are interested in or concerned about - whether it is shark conservation, old-growth deforestation, or any other socially responsible subject. Don’t underestimate the Internet, as it’s an incredible source for information.
Secondly, don't support businesses or restaurants that sell or serve shark products. Send these people a letter informing them of the health dangers posed by consuming shark products. Mercury is bad! If they care about their customers, they'll listen.
Third, spread the word to your friends and family. The more we talk about it, the greater the awareness and hopefully, a positive end result will ensue.
Fourth, for those of you in Japan we invite everyone to come and check out one of our upcoming events. Feel free to contact us anytime with questions, suggestions or concerns - our doors are always open.
Fifth, become a member and supporter of PangeaSeed. We'd appreciate your support and interest.
