Nathan Spoor’s paintings involve images of transition and growth; fluid narratives that chronicle a world rich with the mystery, joy, pain, and delicate balance of personal and spiritual evolution.
Believing that continuous study of technique and process are critical to his own growth as an artist. No image or canvas is too precious to wipe, repaint, and even burn on his own journey to discovery and expression. In this way, Spoor makes a personal and transformative connection with each piece that for him lives on beyond the finished works.  Spoor currently resides in Los Angeles, where he is an active participant in the art community. His work is exhibited in several prestigious galleries and collections worldwide.

Q. Are you the fool who took my fins?

A. Though a fool, it was not I who relieved you of your unfortunate fins.

Q. What do you want the people of Japan to know about sharks?

A. Sharks eat people when they can, but not if there are enough fish around. They particularly like to be offered over to have tea, and due to the certain lack of invitations these days, have regressed into a rather antisocial bubble of sulking.

Q. What's you favorite soup....and don't say "shark fin soup"!?

A. Miso is my favorite since I found out that there are different levels of goodness. This must be due to the amount of love in the chef.

Q. Did you know Sharky's Machine is actually a movie about Burt Reynolds and not about sharks?

A. That has always bothered me. And that Meatballs is not about Italians making spaghetti meals.

Q. Do you know how to say shark in another language?

A. Well, when one yells "SHARK!" it's a pretty good universal word for "get the hell out of the water," and that works for me.

Q. I ate Samuel L Jackson in the movie Deep Blue Sea...was that uncool?

A. It depends on whether the experience was a good one for you. If you got indigestion then it was probably not cool for you. We should talk about your childhood. I think this all stems from you not getting enough attention from Sam as a kid.

Q. Why do you want to help me?

A. Because if I can be on your good side you won't eat me too.

Q. What's your favorite Japanese food/movie/music/etc?

A. Hmmmm. Good sushi, anything Miyazaki, and Funky A (on myspace, they're the sushi guys from the Sushi Mac on Sawtelle, very fun)

Q. Is there any connection between samurai swords and the loss of my fins?

A. I'm thinking the Samurai would respect your fins and it's more of a poacher approach. My guess is machete or cleavers are involved. You guys should really stay away from people all together.

Q. If you were a shark, what shark would you want to be? Answer carefully...there are around 400 different kinds of us.

A. I don't know, I really suppose I'd have to meet more sharks to really understand your personalities and intricacies more fully.

Q. Do you have any solutions on how to save me?

A. Stay away from humans.

Q. Sharks have upper and lower eyelids but they do not blink.

A. That's really fascinating, I had no idea.

Q. The most harmless sharks tend to be the largest.

A. Again, good thing to know. I'll stay close to a larger shark unless I'm turned into one myself.

Q. Sharks can travel up to 20 miles per hour.

A. That's pretty fast, and I'm guessing good exercise. But what's 20 miles away that needs to be seen? More food?

Q. There are 370 or 570 species of sharks?

A. Wow, that's a lot of you guys. Congratulations and keep it up!

Q. The hides of mature female blue sharks are more than twice as thick as those of males.

A. Interesting, is that for any reason in particular? Are the females more aggressive or the dominant hunters? I think females might have thicker skin on the average, they can be pretty ruthless!
